Dominica Electricity

Electricity in Dominica may prevent travelers from using their appliances without adapters

Important Appliances

With bountiful opportunities for hiking, scuba diving, and other excursions into the outdoors, travelers may not place personal grooming at the top of their priority list. Still, travel appliances can come in handy when it's time to charge camera batteries or spruce up for dinner.

The electrical standard in Dominica is 220 or 240 volts at 50 cycles, different from electricity in the United States, which is 110 or 120 at 60 cycles. While the United States typically uses two flat blades and a grounding pin, electrical outlets in Dominica are made to accept appliances with United Kingdom-style, three-prong plugs. More than half of the country's electricity is generated by hydro-power, with the remaining power supplied through diesel fuel.

Being able to utilize the electricity of Dominica while on vacation can be important when you need to shave, blow dry your hair, or re-charge your camcorder and digital camera. Travelers should obtain adapters and converters prior to their vacation to be able to use their small appliances. Some hotels may supply adapters and transformers, and many may also be equipped with dual-voltage capabilities. Travelers should contact their hotel or guesthouse to learn what electrical adapters are needed to use American appliances.

While the"Nature Island of the Caribbean" may not present many opportunities for travelers to require the electrical luxuries provided by travel appliances, vacationers in Dominica should still bring a converter or adapter to allow them easy access to travel comforts.
